Patient Testimonial

"My doctor told me that I had an inflammation of the stomach lining and that I needed to start on a bunch of medications right away. I was dealing with stomach problems on and off for years, and I knew what the medications would do.

The side effects alone were reason enough to explore other forms of gastritis treatments. I called Robert Vena for a consultation because I was willing to see if acupuncture would be able to do anything.

After my first appointment, I met with Rob for a few sessions of acupuncture. The inflammation cleared up quickly and I haven't since suffered with any of the symptoms that were causing me so much discomfort.

I will turn to Chinese medicine over Western medicine any time since working with him."

There are many options for gastritis treatment, but unfortunately, they are not always as beneficial as one might expect or want them to be. Some may cause even greater discomfort, and this is mainly due to the use of prescription drugs that can produce harsh side effects.

There are many medications that can be used to treat gastritis. Most are designed to improve the pH levels of the stomach acid, block acid production, kill bacterium, promote healing, and improve the overall condition of the stomach lining. But the side effects of these medications can be significant. Side effects may include gas, bloating, and diarrhea, and some might even cause problems with overall digestion. This is because some medications kill off the "good" bacteria in the gut as well as the bad.

A practitioner of acupuncture and Chinese Medicine approaches gastritis treatment by treating the entire body and not just the stomach. The chi or energy of the entire body needs to be restored, and this means that we must find and address the underlying cause(s) of the issue.

Common Symptoms for Gastritis

Gastritis symptoms can vary from person to person. Some of the most common gastritis symptoms include:

  • Indigestion that can worsen when certain foods are eaten

  • Vomiting

  • Nausea

  • Fullness in upper abdomen after eating

The time to seek help is when the symptoms of stomach discomfort last for more than a week and over-the-counter solutions do not provide relief. Blood in the stool, urine, or vomit is also a sign that you should seek medical attention immediately.

Common Causes of Gastritis

There is a mucus-lined wall that helps to protect the stomach from digestive juices and aids in the digestion of foods. When this wall becomes inflamed, it is often due to a disruption in the mucus lining. Various conditions and diseases can increase the risk of gastritis.

Acute gastritis and chronic gastritis can differ greatly one from the other. Acute gastritis will often go away on its own while chronic gastritis is often recurring and involves a closer look at diet as well as the overall symptoms experienced. Risk factors for gastritis include:

  • Bacterial infection

  • Parasitic infection

  • Old age

  • Regular or overuse of pain medications

  • Autoimmune problems

  • Excessive alcohol consumption

It is important to identify the cause(s) of the gastritis in order to ensure that it is being treated properly. Without knowing the cause, gastritis may appear over and over again, causing significant pain and discomfort. My goal as an acupuncturist is to prevent such a thing from happening.

Treating Gastritis with Acupuncture: How it Works

When seeking an acupuncturist for gastritis, it is important to understand what he/she is capable of when it comes to treatment of gastric inflammation.

The process typically starts with the acupuncturist's review of the patient's complete medical history. In addition, he/she will ask about diet, symptoms, and any other relevant information pertaining to the issue. This is all done in an effort to understand what may be the root cause of the problem.

When acupuncture is administered, needles will be applied to specific points around the body that can help to improve the function of certain organs and the flow of chi throughout the body's vast network of energetic meridians or channels.

Depending on the underlying problem(s) and the symptoms experienced, Chinese herbal medicines may also be prescribed. Such formulations are all natural and can help to restore the body's internal balance.
